Words do have meanings

This is a comment  wrote on Huffingtonpost as a reply to someone who claimed that George W. Bush was a liberal conservative (The post itself is linked to in blue immediately blow):

Spanish Investigators Push Justice Department On Torture Role; How Will Holder Answer?

Learn some Latin or at least English the word liberal is derived from the Latin root of liber (free) and liberalism means wanting to increase freedom that is to say to increase civil liberties and protection of human beings from torture. Everything that the Bush cabal did is totally abhorrent to liberalism and human decency. So please do not abuse the English langauge the way conservatives love to abuse our human rights. Modern Republican Conservatism under Reagan and Bush II in fact were based on huge expansion of government spending and national debt. So you could say that the Conservative economic policy is government expansion and deficit spending.

The issue of words came up again this morning as I was watching CNN and the question was did Sarah Palin lie about “Death Panels.” And the answer is plain and simple:

Of course Sarah Palin lies. Now whether she understands that she lies or not is another issue. There is a chance that she does not have the intelligence to tell the difference between truth and lies. Chances are that like the best liars she believes her own lies. But according to me telling lies makes you a liar whether you have the gumption to tell the difference.

Now, I’m not talking about being wrong when you have no way of knowing you are wrong. For example when Albert Einstein said, “God does not play dice with the universe,” he may have been right given the experimental data available to him. But if someone said the same thing today the person would be factually wrong and hence it would be a lie.

In the same way if someone three or four hundred years ago had imagined that the universe was created in six days a few thousand years ago, the person would have been wrong but not a liar. At that time there was no way to prove the age of the universe. But today the creationists lie when they make their ridiculous claims about the age of the universe.
