Last refuge of a scoundrel
Patriotism is supposed to be the last refuge of a scoundrel.
Is it?
Perhaps not, but too much patriotism is definitely bad for your nation and bad for humanity. We have to understand that ideas such as, “My country right or wrong,” is bad for the country (we stop improving the country) and bad for morality (we may support torture because my country does it under the leadership of a brainless President and evil visions vice ridden vice President).
Patriotism is pride in one’s country. But a little pride goes a long, long way.
Too much patriotism produces testosterone poisoning and macho pestering leading to demagoguery of the type done by Hitler, Stalin or George W, Bush. This type of over reach becomes hubris and defeat. We have spent more than four trillion dollars (with real accounting principles as all corporations have to do) in Bush’s two disastrous fiasco debacle wars.
We are jobless and in such an economic mess because of stupidity of the leadership and non-caring of the media which bent over for Cheney’s transfer of our wealth to Haliburton, Whitwater and other agents of alleged murder, torture and other war crimes.
So perhaps patriotism is not the last refuge of scoundrels (because you, like me, are a patriot and we are not scoundrels) but too much blind patriotism allows these scoundrels – such as Bush/Cheney – too control our lives and give our taxes and nation’s wealth – the commonweal – to their thieving friends.
