Democracy is for the Greeks
Beware of Greeks bearing gifts is an old saying (from the Trojan war and the horse). One gift that we get from Athens is so called democracy.
So the question is what was the original democracy as practiced by the Athenians?
Out of a population of about half a million about ten thousand were citizens and had any rights (including right too vote in a general assembly). The rest were woman, children and slaves. The ten thousand were members of the aristocracy and well educated (for the era). They would meet in a general assembly, argue the issues at length and vote. The most important vote they had was to execute Socrates (in the words of Plato “the best of men”).
Now, bring the same direct democracy to California with the propositions and monied interests advertising their way to get whatever laws they desire thanks to the ignorance of the general population. A proposition may pass with fifty percent plus one and yet ask for a super majority of seventy five percent to undo its effects.
Dumb, dumb, dumb!
Today we have two propositions set up by individual corporations so they can get a commercial advantage over others. They have been advertising nonstop and the chances are their propositions will win through handily. Over and over again the ignorant Californian for vote single corporation laws. Moreover we keep voting for extra expenditures while voting for less taxes. This has led to our fiscal disaster. You cannot demand more and more services and less and less expenditures.
I suppose that’s the whole country’s problem. Since 1980 we as a nation and as individuals have spent more and more without earning the money for such expenditures.
And unfortunately most of the expenditures are wasted money on military and junk consumer goods.
So our infrastructure and education continues to deteriorate and we owe trillions to our future masters…
