A world without nuclear weapons
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – President Barack Obama called for “a new era of engagement” with the world on Wednesday, pledging to work together with other countries while defending the interests of the United States.
He said he would seek a new deal with Russia on reducing nuclear weapons and said countries that refuse to meet their non-proliferation obligations must face consequences.
Obama said the next 12-months would be pivotal in efforts to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and he pledged to seek the goal of a world without nuclear weapons.
Thank you President Obama. This is the first time that a US President has admitted in the duty of NPT signatories. The NPT was a social contract between all countries. The have nots promissed not to acquire nuclear weapons and those which have them promised to reduce their own and in time reach the goal of a nuclear free Earth, while stopping the countries which did not sign (Israel, India, Pakistan, North Korea – a previous signatory which dropped out of the NPT) from making nuclear bombs.
The first step toward this is to declare the Middle East a nuclear free zone and make sure Israel gives up her five hundred or so bombs. At the same time Iran could reassure all countries including Israel that it was not developing the bomb.
It is a great hope but extremely doable. All we have to do is to obey our own laws about countries which are outside the NPT. We would stop all civilian, nuclear and military aid to Israel, India, and Pakistan until they give up their nuclear bombs. At the same time we assure Israel that it would be under our nuclear umbrella as we work with the five legal nuclear powers (USA, Russia, China, GB, France) to reduce our bombs first to less than five hundred (enough to start a nuclear winter) and then down to zero as the world becomes more peaceful.
